Classifying the satellite plane membership of Centaurus A’s dwarf galaxies using orbital alignment constraints

چکیده

The flattened, possibly co-rotating plane of satellite galaxies around Centaurus A, if more than a fortuitous alignment, adds to the pre-existing tension between well-studied Milky Way and M31 planes $\Lambda$CDM model structure formation. It was recently reported that A (CASP) may be rotationally supported, but further understanding system's kinematics is elusive in absence full three-dimensional velocities. We constrain transverse velocities 27 satellites would stabilise plane, classify by whether their possible orbits are consistent with CASP. Five identified unlikely participate two which clearly non-members. Despite previously line-of-sight velocity trend suggestive common motion, 17 out 22 potential CASP members either orbital direction within both range as well when limiting those plane. On other hand, disregarding 5 off-plane found inconsistent membership enhances significance CASP's fivefold. Our results robust different mass estimates halo, adoption spherical or triaxial NFW potentials.

From Tidal Dwarf Galaxies to Satellite Galaxies

The current popular cosmological models have granted to the population of dwarf satellite galaxies a key role: their number, location and masses constrain both the distribution of dark matter and the physical evolution of their hosts. In the past years, there has been increasing observational evidence that objects with masses of dwarf galaxies can form in the tidal tails of colliding galaxies a...

Satellite Dwarf Galaxies in a Hierarchical Universe: the Prevalence of Dwarf-dwarf Major Mergers

Mergers are a common phenomenon in hierarchical structure formation, especially for massive galaxies and clusters, but their importance for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group remains poorly understood. We investigate the frequency of major mergers between dwarf galaxies in the Local Group using the ELVIS suite of cosmological zoom-in dissipationless simulations of Milky Wayand M31-like host halo...

Testing the Surface Brightness Fluctuations Method for Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies in the Centaurus A Group

We have obtained deep B and R-band CCD photometry for five dwarf elliptical galaxies that were previously identified on Schmidt films covering the region of the Centaurus A (Cen A) group. From a Fourier analysis of the R-band CCD images we determined the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitude m̄R for each stellar system. All magnitudes are similar and, given the small colour spread, sugg...

A search for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus galaxy cluster

Aims. Our aim is to extend the investigations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) beyond the well studied Fornax and Virgo clusters. Methods. We measured spectroscopic redshifts of about 400 compact object candidates with 19.2 < V < 22.4 mag in the central region of the Centaurus galaxy cluster (d=43Mpc), using 3 pointings with VIMOS@VLT. The luminosity range of the candidates covers the brig...

Enrichment in the Centaurus cluster of galaxies

We perform a detailed spatially-resolved, spectroscopic, analysis of the core of the Centaurus cluster of galaxies using a deep Chandra X-ray observation and XMM-Newton data. The Cen-taurus cluster core has particularly high metallicity, up to twice Solar values, and we measure the abundances of Fe, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Ni. We map the distribution of these elements in many spatial regio...
